You’re in the right place and have taken the first step towards a fulfilling career as an accredited, competent teacher of Mindfulness. There is as yet no regulatory body of Mindfulness and, as part of the Mindfulness Now team of tutors I offer you training to become an accredited, competent teacher of Mindfulness in the Bath/Bristol/Gloucestershire/South West area.
Mindfulness is backed by extensive research and has been adopted by NICE as a proven way of dispelling clinical depression. There is rising demand for teachers, but few reasonably affordable training options. Mindfulness was started by John Kabat-Zinn in the USA, who combined Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation to come up with the MBSR method of mindful movement and secular meditation (based on Buddhist meditation) this method was studied and then brought in a slightly different form to the UK as MBCT by Mark Williamson and his team.
I’ve practised yoga since the age of 19, even training to become a yoga teacher, and have been attending Buddhist Meditation over the years, so as a hypnotherapist and colleague of Nick Cooke (I am his assessor for the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma and offer CPD work at his centre) I was invited to join his team of tutors at Mindfulness Now. I studied with Nick after I had previously studied Mindfulness with another organisation, whose principal was trained by the MBCT Oxford team, so I had the opportunity to compare courses and accepted Nick’s offer with enthusiasm. I have been using Mindfulness with individual clients and groups with great success and find it is a method that combines well with other methodologies and therapies I offer.
The Mindfulness Now approach includes significant elements of the MBSR and MBCT approaches in its own unique way and also trains you how to teach Mindfulness to children.
It is advisable to have your own Mindfulness practice already in order to become a teacher so take the opportunity to join yoga and meditation classes if you have not done any, because as a teacher, you are teaching as much by example and embodiment as by methodology. There is a code of ethics and practice to abide by and you commit to supervision, which is included in the fee for the first year and to ongoing CPD (continuing professional development). You become a Mindfulness Now practitioner; however, this is not a franchise so there is nothing to purchase.
The course lasts 5 days and is combined with a paper and case studies which you agree to complete within 6 months of completing the face to face course. It is highly practical, combining your own practice and discussion, with opportunities to learn about and practice the underlying principles, lead meditation sessions, learn how to lead mindful movement and plan a course.
An easy to follow path is mapped out for you so that you have all the skills you need to become an effective practitioner and teacher of mindfulness.
A manual is provided as well as supplementary materials and slides and you commit to an ethical code of practice and ongoing supervision.
For more information on the course content please see Mindfulness Now, as my course runs as part of The UK College of Mindfulness Meditation, enabling you to access the same course as the one in Birmingham in the Bath/Bristol/South West area.
